Interesting Friday (13th!!)
Friday, the 13th!! of October - an interesting day! I was working from home so I took a long walk in the morning, my usual London sight seeing route cross Hyde Park and St. James´s park all the way to Big Ben. It was a lovely, misty morning and I really enjoyed it!
For lunch I´d agreed to meet Caroline from my team for lunch to catch up with few work things. We had a wonderful comida at a genuine Spanish restaurant at Portobello Road, se llama Galicia, see http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/restaurants/restaurant-1302.php. It is really authentic and the food is good When you open the door you see a long, old fashioned bar with rugged, mature Spanish men sitting there having their drinks... and the food is fantastic. The best desserst ever (eventhoug Italian desserts, the best Tiramisu ever and the first home made Profiteroles that I have ever come across - both are to die for!). Eventhough it is interesting to read the online reviews e.g. here http://www.mynottinghill.co.uk/nottinghilltv/restaurants-review-galicia.htm as many people seem to have had bad experiences, I think it might have to do with the fact that this place is very Spanish and it might not always fit with the posh English way of approaching things... go figure...
After the lunch we walked back along the Portobello road and the market was still on. Obviously we could not resist all the temptations and we both got some shoes (my are scarlet red and shiny - l.o.v.e.l.y!!)
In the evening I met up with Esther for a dinner and movie. This time it was Burmese dinner at Edgware Road with excellent reviews. When I got to the place I could not believe this was an award winning restaurant with good value for money. They place looked like and absolute dump from the early 80´s. But we stuck to the plan and had our normal noodles and fried rice and must admit, the food was ok. After that we saw the latest Scorcese movie, The Departed, and it was really good. Quite violent but the story and cast are great (Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson etc.) and you really can´t guess how the story ends. http://thedeparted.warnerbros.com/
After the movie we fancied a drink and the only place we knew around Marble Arch was a guy bar (or more a pub). We decided that´s ok as often the guy bars are the trendy ones with all sorts of people. BUT this one was a gay bar with a capital G. There were l50 men and us. No other women, zero... And these guys were from all walks of life, not just the trendy, stylish, "woman´s best friend" types... I tried to ingnore the fact that we were obviously in a wrong place and kept thinking these guys should be open and tolerant (as that´s what they expect from the rest of the world). Everyone seemed nice eventhough we got some looks, mostly friendly though. Perhaps we could even go as a lesbian couple... but then again, there were no other women couples around so I guess they don´t go to gay bars, or have their own hang-outs... go figure, again!
At some point this old guy, gay as a gay thing on a gay day, came to talk to us say how Gorgeous we looked and what we were doing there. I though he was just amusing and friendly, Esther was thinking that was he´s way of pointing out that we were in fact in a wrong place. I though it was funny anyway. We had our wine and didn´t stick around for too long, I guess they deserved they hetero free environment to chill out after a long week ;)
And to finish off the intersting Friday, while I was waiting for the tube, I saw a tiny little mouse peaking from the wall to the platform, coming out, sniffing around and dissappearing to the rails... It was sort of surreal to see something so small hanging around in a huge tube station and in an environment you don´t really expect to see any animals of any sizes.
Then it was good night and off to the lullaby land.
